May 22; 183 Suspected Rioter Allegedly Paid Rp20mn

24 May 2019 08:54 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe authorities have arrested 183 suspected rioters in Mobile Police Brigade (Brimob) dormitory complex, Petamburan, Tanah Abang on May 22.

“We are currently intensifying the investigation,” said West Jakarta Resort Police Chief Sr. Comr. Hengki Haryadi in his office, Thursday, May 23.

Hengki explained that some of them were non-Jakartans. The majority came from Banten (40 people), Bekasi (11), West Java (27), Central Java (13), Sumatra (11).

The rest came from East Jakarta (9), South Jakarta (6), North Jakarta (3), Central Jakarta (7), West Jakarta (49), and six others have been yet identified and currently in Kramat Jati National Police Hospital.

The shocking truth, Hengki went on to say, all suspects possessed an envelope packed with money. So they were allegedly paid thugs. “We have seized a total of Rp20 million,” he added.

The suspects were part of demonstrators rejecting the election result before the Election Supervisory Board’s (Bawaslu) office on Jalan MH Thamrin, Tuesday evening, May 21. The police turned away the mass to the Tanah Abang area.

The police arrested 300 suspects from three riot locations on the same day. Suspects in Petamburan riot will be charged with layered articles concerning violence and fire based on the Criminal Code (KUHP).
